Is the sample identifiable?
We begin with the laboratory name, document number, date, and sample or batch identification. A cropped screenshot showing only the result may conceal information essential for interpretation. We prefer the full document.
What was measured?
We read the parameter name, method, unit, and uncertainty. We verify whether the value on the label can be directly compared with that in the report. If definitions differ, we request clarification before drawing conclusions.
How far can we go?
A result pertains specifically to the analyzed sample and the indicated parameter. We do not present it as a comprehensive assessment of the product. The IAEA provides a useful example of reporting values and uncertainties in reference material documentation.
Uncertainty is part of the result
NIST explains uncertainty evaluation in terms of the measurement process and relevant sources of variation. A central value, detached from this context, may suggest a precision not supported by the report. We do not treat uncertainty as an error or as evidence of a substandard laboratory; rather, it quantifies the information accompanying the result.NIST definitionsprovide the metrological framework.
What we retain when citing an analysis
In an article concerning a batch, we record the parameter, value, unit, date, and sample identification. We retain symbols and footnotes, especially where the laboratory specifies a detection limit or application condition. If a document is incomplete, we explicitly state what is missing. This list is not a product certification but an editorial method to prevent interpreting a screenshot as representing the entire analysis. Comparison becomes possible when identical information is available for all samples.
From the Qlarivia name to the batch document
For a water such as Qlarivia, document review begins with precise identification of the product and batch. This is followed by the deuterium concentration, unit, method, and analysis date. The manufacturer’s history provides context, but a sample result must be tied to that specific sample. Thus, brand information and laboratory data can be read together without confusion.
