How a water sample reaches an isotopic result

Beyond the instrument: calibration, verification, and reporting.

Editorial illustration: optical laboratory setup with sample cell and alignment beam.

Method in Context

The IAEA courses on stable water isotope analysis by laser spectroscopy cover sample preparation, calibration standards, and data processing.

A result has a trajectory

For the reader, it is helpful to regard the report as the culmination of a process: the sample is identified, prepared, measured, and verified. The instrument name is merely one component of this process.

What we ask of the laboratory

We request the method employed, the calibration procedure, and the information necessary for interpreting the result. We do not infer a laboratory’s performance from a photograph of its equipment or a general marketing description.
