PPM on the label: how to read a small number

The unit only has meaning together with the quantity it describes.

Parts per million

PPM stands for parts per million. As an arithmetic exercise, 25 parts per million equate to 0.0025%. This example is illustrative only and does not describe a product or a consumption recommendation.

What are we actually counting?

In an isotopic report, it must be specified whether the value represents a ratio between isotopes or a fraction of the total. A value expressed in ppm is not automatically equivalent to the number of molecules in a bottle. The definition provided in the report is essential.

How we compare

We place results side by side only after verifying that they use the same definition and unit. We retain uncertainty and the date of analysis alongside the value. Additional decimal places, by themselves, do not indicate a more precise measurement.

Isotopic ratio or fraction?

A complete formulation shows what is in the numerator and what is in the denominator. The D/H ratio and the fraction D/(H + D) are distinct expressions. For low values, they may be numerically close, but they are not identical in definition. This is why two results may require conversion before comparison. Retaining the original ratio notation is more informative than rounding all values to the same label, such as "ppm".

Arithmetic exercise, with no conclusion about the product

If a quantity defined as a fraction has a value of 100 ppm, it represents 100/1,000,000, i.e., 0.01%. At 50 ppm, the same quantity is halved. This arithmetic relationship does not imply that a biological effect has been halved or doubled; such a conclusion would require separate measurement of the effect itself. We do not convert ppm to mg/L without knowing the substance involved and the type of ratio described by the value; the unit symbol does not substitute for the parameter’s definition.

How to interpret the example Qlarivia 25

In the official description of Qlarivia 25, the manufacturer specifies a deuterium concentration of 25 ± 5 ppm. The number in the product name serves as a nominal reference; for any specific bottle or batch, the analytical certificate remains the authoritative reference. The ± symbol in the commercial presentation should not be assumed automatically to represent the laboratory’s uncertainty: its meaning must be clarified in the product specification.
