Guides / EDITORIAL NOTE

Result, Hypothesis, or Opinion?

Three labels that make an article easier to critique.

Editorial illustration: research notebook and magnifying glass.

Result

We tie it to what was actually observed, to the conditions of the study, and to the methodology used. If we do not have the original document, we state this explicitly. We do not extrapolate a narrow result into a universal conclusion.

Hypothesis

A hypothesis is an explanation or possibility that requires investigation. We use phrasing that preserves uncertainty and specify what kind of data could support the conclusion. A proposed mechanism does not automatically become a demonstrated effect.

Opinion

An editorial interpretation may be useful, but we label it as such. On this blog, checklists and recommendations regarding source evaluation are editorial guidelines, not conclusions drawn by the institutions we cite.

SOURCES AND CONTEXT

This text outlines the publication’s editorial policies and stance. It does not present experimental results or a medical assessment.
